Actually there are other species that used to be domesticated to some extent; as an example, before cats took that role, the (common) genet was tamed and introduced in Southern Europe (I think by the Romans?) to keep the vermins away. And, if I reckon, the ferret is the domesticated, modern-day version of what used to be a species of polecat, possibly the european polecat. :>
